Technology Tool 3: Kahoot

About:
Kahoot is a website geared toward fun educational games for kids.  There are games that cover a variety of different school subjects and topics.  Some are quiz types of games while others are strategic games that incorporate learning.  This is a fun and engaging website that would appeal to learners from kindergarten all the way to high school.
Kahoot is highly regarded due to the creative properties that it offers.  Kahoot offers the ability for students to create their own games (or kahoots) to share with their friends.  They can be quiz type games or a jumble type game.  They are best played in group settings so that learners can play with and against each other.
This website also offers a mobile app so that students can play and learn on the go.  This feature makes it easy for students to learn on smartphones and tablets that are easily accessed in today's modern world.  The questions can be presented on the main screen while the players can answer via their mobile device.

How This Tool Aligns to UDL Principles:

  • It provides multiple means of engagement by varying demands and resources to optimize challenge and by increasing mastery-oriented feedback through the use of quiz games.
  • It provides multiple means of representation by guiding information processing, visualization, and manipulation through the creation of Kahoots by students.
  • It provides multiple means of action and expression by varying the methods for response and navigation and using multiple tools for construction and composition when creating students' Kahoots.

Implementation:
This website allows students to be consumers when they play Kahoots, and producers when they are able to create their own Kahoot.  I really like this website for collaborative use or for reviewing material.  I would use this in my classroom by having my students each create their own quiz game.  Then we could use the student-created games in the classroom as review games.  The students can all play using their mobile devices to answer.
As the teacher, you can see how many students got the answers right or wrong.  This can be used as formative assessment data and as a means to discover what material you may need to reteach or review.  I have attached a screenshot of a Kahoot on the topic of U.S. Presidents with the answer key showing.
